If you have decided that politics is the career for you, you will be looking for a way to get your foot in the door. This is a unique career choice in this sense, as there is no traditional route in. Do not apply to everything – It can be tempting to apply for every political job that comes available because you are desperate to get your foot in the door. However, you should not do this. You need to ensure that you apply for jobs whereby you can bring true value and jobs that will take you to where you want to be.

Perseverance is key – If there is one thing you need to have in politics, it is perseverance. Unless you are incredibly lucky, you are not going to get your big break straight away. Get involved in community events – Last but not least, if you are looking for a job in local politics, it is vital to get involved in the community as much as possible. Speak to local political groups and councillors to see if they need assistance or support with any particular local issue. This is an excellent way to build a network for local politics, and you never know where this could lead you.
