Standing Out at a Tech Convention or Conference

Tech conventions and conferences are rapidly gaining popularity. Nowadays, you will find increasing numbers of self-confessed nerds are attending conventions and conferences to get ahead of the game and find out all of the latest developments in the tech world. It’s not really all too surprising. Cutting-edge technology is being developed all of the time, and often the public won’t hear about it until it’s released by a major brand for extortionate prices. Conventions and conferences allow you direct access with the developers and first runs of certain projects, allowing you to discuss new developments in greater depth and try out the latest software and hardware before most others even know of its existence. However, it’s not only potential consumers attending these things. They pose great potential for business owners and professionals too. You can put your own work out there to be discussed, sampled, evaluated, and reviewed too. The one problem? Standing out. When it comes down to it, a lot of tech-oriented things look a little bland from the outside and are relatively difficult to explain to someone without a heap of industry-specific knowledge. Your stall or stand could quickly blend into the hoard of others surrounding it. But not to worry. There are ways to counter all of these problems in one way or another. Here are a few different ways to ensure that you and your work stand out at any tech convention or conference.

Social Media

If you have a particularly exciting announcement, or merely want to let people know where you will be operating on the day, social media is the way to go. That’s right. Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram aren’t just the stomping ground of celebs. More people than ever are opening up accounts on these sites to access information more easily. So there are bound to be people logged on somewhere out there who will take notice of your posts and come visit you to see what you’re all about or what you have to offer at a conference or convention. Make sure to post alerts to your latest developments, what you have to offer, and your stall’s whereabouts to help people find you!

Projections

Make a show of your developments. If possible, bag yourself a spot where you will have room to project images, slideshows, or videos on a large, blank wall. Space is limited at this kind of event, but even the most compact space could prove to be ideal if you have the right projector at hand. Others are unlikely to have considered this and crowds are much more likely to stop and look at projections than pay attention to a plain, ten a penny stall. You’ll notice that many people at conventions or conferences tend to employ promotional staff. Sure, these individuals are engaging and will bring people in to check out developments and what you have to offer, but you have to remember that they are generally employed by agencies. Many will only receive a short brief about your company and what you focus on in preparation for their shift. You can’t expect them to be all-knowing professionals. Their role is to be polite, greet people, and pass them on to you if any questions are raised. If possible, you should take along employees, partners, or other people who are in the know to represent you. They will be able to answer questions more precisely, thoroughly, and reliably. Remember that most people who are attending these kinds of events know what they are talking about. So promotional staff are unlikely to be able to bluff their way through a conversation about specific, specialist interest areas convincingly. People who are involved in the development process of new products and services are also much more likely to be genuinely passionate about the topic, which helps too.

Business Cards

Make sure that you have business cards at hand for anyone who shows particular interest. You never know who your next big investor, partner, or reliable employee could be. Cards are cheap, so there’s no excuse not to have any made up. Ensure they have all of the necessary details printed on them so that someone can get in touch with you if needs be.
